Say it just loots gold and gems, a player could then make a script that .loot's and grabs maul and foci (or other things) at the same time, and we'll have no way of knowing if it was .loot that grabbed 3 different gems and gold or a script that grabbed 3 extra things.
It'll make it a lot harder to tell and monitor at least. Both for you players and for us.
So the question, in fact, is in speed still? I'm not quite sure, but I believe if a person used script to loot exactly ONE item (let's say some valuable cloth or whatever), you couldn't detect it at all. Or possibly more items, if the script did it slow enough?
EDIT: I thought the idea in this topic was that .loot would be only usable in PvM anyhow, so not sure how relevant the talk about maul and foci is.

Of course we couldn't. But that's the problem exactly.. Where's the limit? What speed limit do we agree on? And then there's the problem with monitoring it and the margins caused by latency etc. The only safe solution for all of us is to keep looting scripts illegal.
And what if someone with zomgish mouse-handling skills comes and loots way faster than anyone else? It's a theoretical possibility. It's also possible to boost the speed of looting by other means than looting macro, such as making the corpse gump open at the same place all the time etc.
EDIT: The main reason I'd actually like to see looting scripts allowed in PvM is just that my mouse left button is screwed up, does doubleclicks when I want to do single etc. And sometimes doesn't click at all . And cause of the wear it causes to hands. And it's just so annoying to loot some of those tiny things like eyes of newt etc.

I'm not going to debate this with you anymore, as you seem to want to force your opinion through. There's a clear difference between looting 10 things in a second and looting the 3-4 things which is max possible by hand.
I'm not sure how that looting script works, but .loot command would be nice if it worked only on reagants and gems. Also by working only for those two it wouldn't matter is it used on pvm or pvp, assuming it doesn't loot from different bags, only from main bag. In fact it would make useless to mess up your main bag with reagants to prevent fast looting, because people could loot those regs easily anyway. Also potions would be nice add for that command.
personally I would like to see a .loot command for just regs and gems, they're a pain to grab.
If it only grabbed regs/gems only from a corpse container and no "deep" searchng through bags it would make it fairly useless in pvp I would imagine. If the movement of an item is set to say a quarter of a second to half a second, it would be reasonable I'd think.
it's true that the speed is a tricky issue, making it hard to monitor, due to latency. i didn't even know some looting scripts were looting 10 items a second lol, that's just a lot of abuse and not fair. the 1 item per second would seem fine for me, but if it's better to have all scripts illegal, then so it be.
what pisses me off the most in looting isn't finding all the crap and looting it, is the DRAGGING part having to keep my finger pressed on the button. seriously, that hurts and annoys when you do it hundreds of times in minutes.
