It's true it's not to be abused, being it for fun or not. Main reason for that:
So using a mayday is practically the same as telling your friends to come help you as reinforcements when you're being attacked. It gives the freedom for the Law or other religions to attack on sight. So in other words it's only to be used when you're getting robbed/killed.
Just before, during or after a fight, you can send out pigeons (or use .mayday) asking friends, guild
maters etc. for help. If the reinforcement arrives during or shortly after the fight, they are allowed to
aid their friends by attacking the enemy right away
