Virus strikes! *FIXED!!!!!*

Well folks... two days ago I was hit by a virus while working on my music (ms0cfg.exe) <---- virus. It was some sort of fake AntiVirus thing, which I did not click, instead my Avira removed it and I rebooted. I had no access to my desktop afterwords. It was blank and I could not right-click on it or even place items on my desktop cause it was not "visible". ALL of my "Start Menu" items were deleted. ALL of my installs were deleted. So that's what I was lead to believe. It was like this shell of a virus was bubbling everything from me. I could access anything on my computer while exploring my "Windows Explorer", but not being able to view my desktop nor being able to place anything there... I had to fix it. I've been trying to get my computer back to normal ever since. Had to do a full re-install. I tried just recovering, but all of my back-ups were failing. I tried several solutions and always ended up "access denied" by administrator BS. I tried to change from Windows XP to Windows 7 and kept getting the bluescreen of death when setting up registry.

Well... after doing something I didn't want to do, since I had a LOT of important files not backed-up yet, I reformated. Day two of having failures still, my brother says to me "Oh I know why it keeps crashing. You can't have any USB ports pluged in while installing Windows 7." So I'm freaking out hard now after hearing that and reformating. Losing so much data. Anyways not only was it the USB mouse causing crashes, it was also my graphics card. So I had to unhook both of them and FINALLY it finishes installation using my on-board video and omg talk about sloooooooow! It can't even handle Solitaire! I need something to do while my windows is updating!

Now not only with all this crap I have to deal with, I now have to also deal with horrible weather making internet sooo super slow and windows updates / driver updates taking even longer. Best part of this though, is my XP 4 GB Ram has now bumped up to it's full potential of 8 GBs of Ram! Boo-yah Windows 7!!!! Forgot the rest I wanted to say after running upstairs for a moment, so... hoping to be on ICQ/In-Game tonight!

Hitler Parody WILL be made due to this! Even longer and more scenes than my last one.

My brother just done something to a setting on my desktop so I won't be on tonight. I'm here with a very very very very OLD laptop now I used back in Afghanistan in 2007 and it was old then lol. So all I got tonight is forums and MAYBE ICQ. Gonna try and d/l it now. Luv you all!

I can't load my desktop anymore. Can't even get into safemode. All I get now is a blackscreen.

I had the same virus i think, i fought it and defeated it ;)

unhide.exe makes everything visible again after the virus hides it, you need to continuously close random .exe files in the task manager, then delete the files the virus has created in appdata, run full virus scans, and use malwarebytes to kick its ass also

Stick to a porn website that you know is legit and virus free and has embedded videos (not links out to other websites), Im not buying this music story.

Was it some kind of windows security essentials looking fake antivirus? If not then it probably is a new one that works in the same way. I had this virus but managed to get rid of it without reformatting. Nothing was deleted, files were just hidden. These viruses just try scare tactics to try and make you install the fake antivirus so it can fuck up your PC even more. The way I dealt with it:
1. Open Task manage
2. Click on processes tab
3. End all of the processes associated with the fake antivirus.
4. Delete any .dll files associated with the program (think i found mine in the temp folder)
5. Run MalwareBytes

Looks like the scare tactics worked on you and you went ahead and reformatted, bad times.

EDIT: I forgot a part of step 3. Before you and all the processes, make a note of where they are stored. End them and then find them and delete them.

Safe mode is always your friend too, or a live linux distro if it comes to that. Formatting is almost never necessary.

Reformatting isen't a big hassel unless you're silly enough to use 1 partition, which a suprising amount of people are.
