Exactly, that's what you and me would do, but the newbie might not think of it.

1. It's not a fun system the 10th time you look for relic.
2. It's possible to die and not be able to retrieve your things
3. Someone can take the relic
4. You don't know if level 3 was cleared recently
5. The relic can spawn on a mob that wanders into the lake, or dies an inaccessible place.
Personally, I just found it annoying that I had to clear everything just to be able to get to a slightly bigger challenge.. And half the time I wasn't able to find the relic at all, even after clearing.
And I actually agree with the spiders. It's a massive risk to fight a spider as a newb.. If you get webbed you have like 75% chance of dying because you can't cure level 2 poison yet. At least some of them could be replaced with other things.

I think a password (or npc interaction) would be better than the relic for the following:
- It makes you look for it the first time, which is a small effort to access lvl 3, compared to nothing;
- The first level can be spared for the real noobies;
- No one can take the password in their backpacks and log out and no monster can be stuck for a week with the wrong z with the relic inside.
It could also be levers but I think we have enough of those on all other dungeons and not enough NPC interaction.
Edit: or a puzzle including the statue/lake outside the dungeon.

ya it is annoying when rats fall into that lake or stuck somewhere. could replace the relic with something that is always available.. like X amount of lizard hides or something similar.
if the spiders are a problem, that giant slime is worse as it loots and can 2 hit newbs.
edit: or just make more relics instead of just 1
