Potential policy change re: restoring characters

Post by Iktomi »

Hey folks,

So we're considering a potential policy change re: restoring deleted characters. As you may know, there was recently a request by someone who had ragequit for us to restore a deleted character. Their request was denied due to existing policy; however, we wanted to see how people felt about this topic going forward (it would not apply retroactively).

Previous policy: No deleted characters can be restored, full spot.
Proposed policy: Going forward, the GMs may (up to their discretion) restore character(s) that have not been deleted as a result of the passage of time. I.e. if you're away longer than 6 months or a year, or whatever it is, then you're still hooped.

What do people think? Regardless of whether the players are fully in favour of the policy change, we may still not implement it as there are workload implications that could potentially come into play as well. We just wanted to get an idea before we moved our discussions further.

I would continue with the current policy.

It has been followed for over 5 years (both my and Alteran's time) and I see no reason to change it. Tens of players have come back and I've had them all starting from scratch again. Even tho' it wouldn't affect any of the current players, I just don't see it fair for everyone who have been denied in the past.

If you nuke your account, it's your own fault. If it has been wiped due to inactivity, I'd say the same.

How many people have NOT come back cause they cba to macro hours on end again? Wouldn't it possibly increase the playerbase if you gave them chance to get chars back?

Keep it simple.
If you nuked your own account, it's your problem.
If it was deleted due to inactivity, the possibility of restoring may exist.

There are those people who leave and slam the door closed while at it. Pangaea has always angered people till some extend for reason or another. Others might have to delete their characters because they might never leave unless they did, etc. Seen many different quit cases while on pang.

I think if the reasoning is good enough, your characters could be retrieved. Perhaps make it one time thing also.

i know what the policy has been and theoretically it should be that way.
but dammit, do we really have to be so strict in following our rules?being strict should be about abusing bugs/stuff that falls under the asshole rule/etc
this is just about ppl wanting to come back and not having to retrain everything. after all, they did train that stuff already

  • 1. Raise the timer to wipe accounts from characters/items at least to 5+ years
    2. Make it clear for players that it will happen if they don't log to their accounts
I don't think it's even written anywhere that old accounts are wiped from characters if they inactive for x years. That's where the problem lies.
It's not benefiting anyone that old players who want to come back doesn't even know about the timer and when they find out their characters are gone they just cba to come back.

What comes to restoring characters what you have deleted yourself manually, I don't see a reason to change that.

I can't recall any lost cases due to starting all over again. If you do come back, you come back for the kicks. You get them regardless of starting over again.
