Re: Potential policy change re: restoring characters
If I had the characters from my old account back, I'd probably play again. Honestly, I just don't want to go through the boredom of training characters to not suck again.
Re: Potential policy change re: restoring characters
It still wouldn't change anything for the current players. It would only affect players who come back after the change of policy. There's a small quote in the OP;Chivay wrote:If I had the characters from my old account back, I'd probably play again. If Alteran and folks demolished all account data that was inactive for 6 months or more (back in '08 or so) - I don't think here's much to gain anyhow? Unless we have some backup of a backup of backup hidden somewhere?

Re: Potential policy change re: restoring characters
I say no because how hard is it really to just check into your account to avoid the inactivity deletion, not hard log on once and your reset. As for rage quitting that is the persons fault if they get that upset that they want to do that then let them. Starting over just gives you more to do most of those players that you will give it back to will probably play for a couple months maybe and then get bored again like they did before or have the same situation happen that causes them to rage quit again. GMs should not have to babysit players stupid decisions no matter how easy it is to undo. You are here to enforce policies and move the game along, players that are willing to get so mad at the game and rage delete probably are not that great for the shard anyway.

Well, that fostered the kind of discussion that I was looking for. I think I'm leaning towards the suggestions made by Basil and Darian (probably amongst others). Remove the account deletion due to inactivity altogether (but make it so that items still wipe after the current time period), and keep a ban on ragequit deletions.
Maybe one rule clarification re: ragequits. Players are allowed one restoration (per account lifetime) provided that it occurs within a day of the deletion (to account for accidental/drunk deletions, but also irrational ragequits).
Re: Potential policy change re: restoring characters
As an added note, I see no reason not to apply an account restore retroactively for those who were deleted due to inactivity (if technically possible).
Speaking for myself (when I came back as a player, I had to start from scratch), I probably wouldn't have had I not known that I had days and days of macro-time ahead of me due to writing my thesis. (Not exactly the type of player activity we're looking for). Plus, I would feel no resentment towards people who get to benefit from this, even though I didn't.
In cases where someone may have already recreated a new account, they can choose between their old account and new account (assuming Ares is willing to go through with this trouble) and then the one that is decided as "duplicate" is deleted.

Like I said, I don't have a problem with the extra work. Doesn't take long, and I doubt it'll happen often. Especially with a time penalty.

I would say a restoration from accounts deleted from duration would be acceptable with the caveat that you either choose between your current account or your old one, I think however there ought to be a time limit when it comes to the current player base deciding if they want their old account back or not as, there might be a void left if too many people decide to get their old account back, that is a void left RP wise, suddenly the rapture is going to occur on Pangaea and we don't have RP in place to back that up, again, assuming we have the data backed up and a bunch of players opt for their old accounts back, I for one, will be keeping mine, I have achieved far more on my new account than my old one.
Curious though, how will this effect classes that have had changes to for instance their health and mana regenerations or mages hunting buffs? Not sure if anyone has taken into account some of the changes that have happened and if things will go wonky with character imports. Skill checks too, not sure if the class system has changed as far as skills that a class may receive at different levels other than the monks' gm meditation. All stuff that should also be considered, it isn't difficult to remedy these things I am sure, but might not be as quick and easy as some think.
