Difficulty creating new characters

I'm not sure about anyone else, or if I have a file missing from the game; but I've been having difficulty making a new character.
I would log on, get to the new character section, be able to make a name and decide on appearance etc., but once I hit "create the character" (or whatever it actually says), the game freezes and doesn't create my character.

Is there any reason for this? Will I have to reinstall?

Many thanks for any light that can be shed on this issue I'm having.

Make sure you pick the advanced class, not one of the presets. Also make sure itsa human not a elf.
