Updating POL?
So if I'm not mistaken we're running on POL96 at the moment. There's been three newer versions ever since. Should we perhaps think about updating to a newer version with more features and possibilities.
I know converting the scripts might be a big, time-consuming job. Dunno which is harder, from 96 to 98 or directly to 99.
Anyway, if I'm not mistaken KR 2d client works with POL 98 and both SA and KR work with POL 099 thus fixing at least one huge issue we have at the moment - the 3d "speedhack"
Anyway, would be very nice!

Re: Updating POL?
It would be possible to support KR clients on Pang in the same way as they're supported on POL98/99. In fact, the work needed to add the support when converting to POL98/99 is similar as adding KR support right now. The support is heavily scripted, not simply native to the core itself.
In addition there's been updates on the newer cores that would require nearly every script to be altered manually to work as intended.
Currently it would be near impossible for me to take on the task of upgrading the core to 98/99 due to very limited time. 97 would still be within the possible range, time wise, but it doesn't offer much new in comparison.

Re: Updating POL?
Having alot of experience with POL myself, most of the changes that POL99 might bring to the table would be back end stuff, not noticed by the players (and any new changes / features players would notice would have to be scripted).
Since nearly EVERY command in POL changed and the way that config files work was completely changed to a new system, these would all have to be re-written, something that is a time consuming process, especially when you are talking about some config files being as big as nearly 1 MB (npcdesc.cfg for example).
Additionally, POL does not officially support KR and in fact, the only thing the KR client brings to the table is new graphic tiles & items, all of which have to be manually enabled and scripted if they have any additional functionality. The enhanced client does not work with POL without some major trickery.
POL99 is also still in beta so it is subject to changes nearly every version that is released. Should a new release change the way something works, it could affect nearly every script on Pang.
Truth be told, Pang doesnt even make use of more than 70% of the possible graphic tiles and items that exist in Mondain's Legacy and lets not forget, there are four other maps not even being used...
As far as the 3d client is concerned, this is easily fixed, a simple line in the pol.cfg file can deny both any client version(s) they want as well as denying any 3d clients if they wish.

Re: Updating POL?
The point is 3d fix lag for american people. So what we would want is 3d to not run faster than 2dAs far as the 3d client is concerned, this is easily fixed, a simple line in the pol.cfg file can deny both any client version(s) they want as well as denying any 3d clients if they wish.
Re: Updating POL?
With client version spoofing made so easy nowadays, the pol.cfg style isn't so effective anyhow.

Is it really as hard to switch from 96 to 98 as it was from 95 to 96 in Repsak's time?

Heard it took months of scripting.Darian Darkmind wrote:Is it really as hard to switch from 96 to 98 as it was from 95 to 96 in Repsak's time?
Re: Updating POL?
i would ask the staff to do it if the changes were huge. but like it was said, we aren't even using all the stuff that is already available to us. we could have a lot of different things, but this is pangaea. we have good, custom things and don't necessarily need to have all the stuff that appears and "add" it to this world. even if some of the new stuff is good, would we use it just because it's there?
